The synthesis of novel N-heterocyclic phosphine ligands and their application in palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions

This thesis deals with the synthesis of novel imidazolyl-based phosphines and their use as powerful ligands in palladium-catalyzed C-C, C-O and C-N bond forming processes. More specifically, N-arylated imidazolyl and benzimidazolyl phosphines were synthesized and found to create efficient palladium-catalysts in the challenging monoarylation of ammonia and phenol synthesis from (hetero)aryl bromides and chlorides with caesium or potassium hydroxide. Furthermore, detailed mechanistic studies were undertaken and it was shown that the palladium-catalyzed hydroxylation even proceeds at room temperature. The novel 2-(dialkylphosphino)-N-aryl-1H-imidazoles have been prepared using a straightforward 2-step synthetic protocol and were notably stable towards moisture and air. They were also successfully employed in the palladium-catalyzed Heck-Cassar coupling of aryl chlorides, the cyanation of aryl chlorides using the environmentally benign cyanation source potassium ferrocyanide K4[Fe(CN)6] as well as the diaryl ether synthesis.
