The synthesis and applications of novel imidazolium-based phosphane ligands and precursors in cross-coupling and reduction reactions

This thesis deals with the synthesis of novel imidazolium-based phosphane ligands and their usage as powerful ligands in palladium-catalyzed C-C, C-O and C-N bond forming processes as well as the application of their precursors in reduction reactions. More specifically, 2-phosphanylmethyl-N,N’-biarylimidazolium salts and bisimidazolium salts were synthesized and found to create efficient palladium-catalysts in the challenging monoarylation of ammonia and phenol synthesis from (hetero)aryl bromides and chlorides with caesium or potassium hydroxide. Furthermore, a convient recycling procedure was demonstrated for the hydroxylation and the direct amination. The novel 2-methlimidazolium-based phosphanes have been prepared using a straightforward 2- or 3-step synthetic protocol and were remarkably stable towards moisture and air. They were also successfully employed in the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-coupling of aryl halides, the gold-catalyzed hydroamination and phase-transfer catalysis. The bisimidazolium salts were effectively applied in ruthenium-catalyzed hydrogenation of esters. In addition, the 2-phosphanylmethyl-N,N’-biarylimidazolium salts were successfully transferred to the commercial market.
