Carbon Dioxide as a C–1 Building Block in Monomers and Polymers

Several bifunctional ammonium and phosphonium salts were employed as one-component catalysts for the conversion of CO2 and epoxides to produce mono- and polyfunctional cyclic carbonates. These catalysts showed superior activities compared to their monofunctional analogs leading to excellent yields of the cyclic carbonates. Additionally, it was shown that these cyclic carbonates can be used as prepolymers for the synthesis of non-isocyanate polyurethanes. Furthermore, several organocatalysts were used for the copolymerization of CO2 and formaldehyde. The effects of the reaction parameters including reaction time, pressure and temperature on the composition and molecular weight distribution of the polymer were studied.
