In the context of the separation problem arising from the use of supporting electrolyte and redox mediators, the applicability of soluble polyelectrolytes and polymediators was explored. Using the TEMPO-mediated transformation of alcohols into carbonyl compounds as a model reaction, it was demonstrated that polymethacrylates containing TEMPO and supporting electrolyte units can efficiently fulfil their purpose. Cyclic voltammetry-based catalyst benchmarking studies indicated that the polymediator can compete with the molecularly defined TEMPO species. The alcohol oxidation is also highly efficient on a preparative scale, whereby the polymer-based approach allows for the separation of both mediator and supporting electrolyte in a single membrane filtration step. Moreover, it was shown that the polymer-containing electrolyte can be reused multiple times.
