Base Metal Catalyzed Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid and Alcohols

This dissertation deals with base metal catalyzed dehydrogenation reactions, it contains two parts. In the first part, the dehydrogenation of formic acid under aqueous conditions by well-defined cobalt pincer complexes with HN(CH2CH2PR2)2 chelating PNP ligands was disclosed. Mechanistic studies showed that both the oxidation state of the metal and the substituents on the phosphorus donors of the pincer ligands are crucial to obtain high activity, while CO coordination to cobalt poisons the catalyst. A non-classical innocent bifunctional outer-sphere mechanism where the N-H group of the pincer ligand allows for stabilization of the active Co-formate intermediate was suggested by DFT calculations. In the second part, a manganese catalyzed dehydrogenation of alcohols based on in-situ combination of manganese pentacarbonyl bromide with phosphine free oxamide ligands was developed. Preliminary results showed that this system is suitable for acceptorless dehydrogenation of isopropanol and ethanol. Based on the experimental observations, a unique anionic Mn complex was prepared which is proposed to be an active species during the reaction.
