Structure and function of heterotrophic protists in biological soil crusts

Heterotrophic protists (previously called protozoa) are unicellular organisms. Unlike primary producers (such as algae) they acquire energy and nutrition by feeding on other organisms. They can live in numerous ecosystems from aquatic to terrestrial habitats, such as biological soil crusts (biocrusts). Biocrusts are a complex of various communities of terrestrial phototrophic (i.e., light-dependent organisms, such as algae) and heterotrophic organisms. Heterotrophic protists play important ecological roles in the soil food web, nutrient recycling, and energy transfer within the food web.

In this dissertation, heterotrophic protists in biocrusts obtained from unstudied habitats of German dunes in the Baltic Sea region and Icelandic grasslands were investigated. A detailed study of the diversity and community composition of heterotrophic protists revealed for the first time the dominance of amoebae and flagellates in biocrusts on Baltic Sea dunes. Further, taxa from the detected dominant group (Cercozoa) were categorized by their feeding behaviour. The investigations showed a high amount of protists feeding on bacteria (bacterivores) in dunes and grasslands. This indicates the important role of bacteria in the global soil food web. The detailed investigations in this thesis finally led to the discovery of new protist species in biocrusts.
